christian disillusionment.

christian disillusionment.

Some of us have ventured into the deep darkness of the Valley of the Shadow of Death.

Some of us didn’t have any warning.

Some of us were thrust into it without  permission.

Some of us have seen things others have not.

The death can be actual death. Or it can be the death of a dream, a prayer, a promise.

Don’t stick to your guns with what you thought you knew – just because you think you know it.

We’ve read the stories of many men and women throughout the centuries who have gone where we have not gone. We’ve taught about them and preached about them. We’ve been amazed at their faith – determination, endurance, tenacity, devotion, commitment. But they are mere stories on a page until the danger comes to our door. Then we find out what we’re made of. Or should I say – what God is made of.

storm-over-the-fenceline_l

Sometimes you can’t speak to the storm because it’s so loud it can’t hear you. Sometimes all you can do is hang on for dear life. Oh, but that doesn’t look very Christian. Really? I’m sure Job, Paul, and Jesus on the cross looked really “Christian”.

Trusting God doesn’t mean you have to look so good to everyone. We’re afraid we’re not representing God honorably if a hair is out of place. Who are you trying to fool?

Don’t be afraid to be you. God already knows who you are.

Don’t be afraid of the storm. Nothing is going to happen that God does not see.

Don’t be afraid if you don’t do your part, God will not come through. You will collapse from exhaustion.

Don’t cling to your performance, cling to God’s performance.

Some of us have seen the scenery in the Valley – where life has gone terribly wrong. And we have come out of the darkness with an understanding we didn’t have going in.

But no one listens.

I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees you.
Job 42:5
Some of us have seen Him.

ashamed.

ashamed.

Embarrassed.

Humiliated.

Ashamed.

Some of us have felt it more than others. But we’ve all felt it.

When you see things the way God does, it makes it so much better. That’s because God is always there, waiting for us, and wants to help us. We just have to see things his way.

desert

See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland.

-The Bible

Don’t spiral down into hopelessness even when everything looks hopeless.

God is able to make a way in the most difficult situation. Even when we mess up. Guess what? He wants to because he loves you more than you know.

january thaw.

january thaw.

January’s thaw loosens winter’s icy grip and brings reprieve.

The birds find berries once hidden in drifts of snow and the deer find fresh bark.

And water! Cool, clean, and fresh.

If God provides for these, how much more for you?

Weighted down with heavy ice and snow, branches threaten to snap, exposing its tender green to the cruel cold.

But now, they spring up toward the sky once again.

Whatever your winter is – God will bring hope and rest in the midst of it.

no words.

no words.

Sometimes, there aren’t any words.

Have you ever wanted to pray, and couldn’t?

The words just won’t come out.

Another thing the Bible tells us is that God does not look at the outside …

…he looks in our heart.

It’s alright if there are no words.

God hears you anyway.

new year.

new year.

I’m not going to tell you this year will be better.

It  might not be.

But I can tell you that you are not alone as you face a new year.

The Bible says this:

Never will I leave you;

never will I forsake you.

So we say with confidence,

The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid.

What can man do to me?

When we’re faced with trouble, sadness, disappointment – no matter what it is – we can be sure God is with us.

I know this to be positively true. The darkest time in my life was when I lost my son at age 24. They say losing a child is the worst thing.

It is.

You have to believe in someone bigger than yourself.

And when you do, there are surprises along the way – like love notes just for you – from your Heavenly Father.

deliver us from evil.

deliver us from evil.

Evil exists in a broken world.

Accidents happen.

People get sick.

Tires go flat.

Houses catch on fire.

We relish in the good – and so we should.

But sometimes, evil can shadow the good and we forget the good is there.

There is only one who can redeem the atrocities in our lives. God.      hopehely-snowflake_l

The Bible tells us he is compassionate and merciful. His love is so great that he died for the world because evil kept him at a distance.

Does his love stop there? No. It continues on and on and on.

And often, God shows he is with us when he surprises us with comfort when snowflakes fall gently upon the earth.

All around us is God’s presence.

Be comforted.

great.

great.

God is so great in his love, He continually places sure footing before our steps – even when we have messed up. God doesn’t sit back like some of us do, just waiting for the ax to fall on someone. His mercy is so great and His compassion is so deep that He weeps over us.

treasures.

treasures.

Memories ebb and flow, washing upon the shore of our mind. Sometimes the tide comes in uninvited, carrying debris with it. If we allow the debris to lodge in our minds, we can become laden down with self-pity, discouragement, and depression.

The tide will go out. And with it, the debris.

But look! There are some surprising treasures that the tide brought with it. If you look carefully, you will find them.

Pain does not have to drown us.  God knows we do not have the strength to tread water for long. He brings reprieve in the form of little joys that will make us smile in the midst of even deep sorrow.

The first clear notes of a cheerful robin, chasing away the bitter winds of winter.

The surprise visit of  a summer breeze, bringing relief on a hot summer day.

The palette of  warm, autumn colors painted on a dreary, gray canvas.

The gentle falling snowflakes quieting a troubled heart.

All is well.

a cup of water.

a cup of water.

Sometimes, giving out of your pain seems unattainable. That’s because you are looking to do great things.

Did you know that Jesus said the least in the kingdom is the greatest? In other words, we often look for the biggest and brightest and best of everything – when God almost always picks the smallest, and dimmest, and the least of everything.

Jesus was born in a barn. Not a castle.

Your giving can be useless and small in your eyes, but it’s a sacrifice God takes note of.

And you know something? It seems to be the secret to soothing your hurting heart.

I tell you the truth, anyone who gives you a cup of water in my name because you belong to Christ will certainly not

lose his reward.

what if.

what if.

What if around the corner, everything will change?

What if you could step into another dimension and see life very differently than you do right now?

Life is more than what you see.

Today may be grim with heartache and discouragement. You may be lonely and really believe no one cares.

Things are not always as they appear.

God has figured our sadness into the equation and knows you will smile again.

What if God has your concerns taken care of? And you just aren’t aware of it?
