accept.

accept.

Life can be hard.

And one of the hardest things is to accept that life is hard.

We know it, but we think it happens to other people.

In one sense, it is good that we don’t dwell on what could happen. Do you see God wired us that way? I realize some of us do worry or are fearful. But that isn’t what God wants for us.

Yes, there are horrendous tragedies which some of us will face. We go through the emotions of pain as we respond to them.

But eventually, we have to accept. Not just mentally, but emotionally. Resting in acceptance comes from trusting that your pain…your loss…is in bigger hands.

There are some things we can change. There are some things we cannot.

I used to cringe at the part of the “Serenity Prayer” that said accept the things you cannot change.

What? I am a go-getter. Couple that with being in a very pro-active church environment that was out to change the world, accepting was not in my vocabulary.

It is now.

It takes time when you face something that inexplicable and devastating and you cannot change it.

This is not a reproach in diminishing God’s ability to heal, comfort, or strengthen us. It also doesn’t mean miracles aren’t real.

It means things will happen that we don’t understand.

The people around you may not have felt the depth of the pain quite like you. The proportion of the time to accept and the pain you are facing has to be equal. It has to take as long as the pain is deep.

And it is okay.

If others do not understand, that is okay, too.

Because you will have a new found confidence in being content with who you are that is not based on what other people think.

The strength and confidence you gain will be equal to the depth of pain you are experiencing. God doesn’t leave us with nothing.

God is with us.

it’s okay.

it’s okay.

Far too many times we try to fix things.

Is it because of the fast paced world we live in today? Where everything is analyzed and has a label?

Solutions are usually only one click away. Everyone seems to have an answer.

Rarely, do we hear the right answer: it’s okay.

It’s okay to not be okay.

Stop trying so hard.

Stop listening so much.

It’s okay when everything isn’t perfect.

It’s okay if you are overwhelmed.

Go with it. It won’t be like this forever.

we will discover what is predictable.

feeling rejected.

feeling rejected.

One form of pain is rejection.

It says:

not wanted.

not liked.

not valued.

God says something very different.

“But if God loved me  he wouldn’t …”

The rain falls on all of us just the same. God loves you enough to help you through the rejection.

After all, Jesus was rejected. He knows.

say something nice.

say something nice.

Everyone is going through something.

The gal at the cash register.

The guy delivering your fuel.

The elderly man who lives next door.

Do you think about other people that way?

Do you wonder what people’s stories are?

When you’ve known what pain is, you become more aware of other people’s stories.

When you think about others before yourself, you’re more apt to say something nice to them.

It doesn’t take much to make someone feel good. You might be saving them!

let it be.

let it be.

In the Northeast, summer blooms mingle with the faded colors of late summer.

Already, roadside maple trees are speckled with red and gold.

The morning dew is heavy. The air is chilled.

I love the beginning of new seasons.

Recently, I was driving through the small college town nearby and felt such a sense of love for my community. Where did that come from, I thought. It was a long-ago familiar feeling that is rare these days.

That’s what happens to you when your child dies.

Seasons just come and go without our help. Everything has a time and purpose. Many of life’s situations are not in our control.

So, we just let it be.

Take one day at a time. Hard to do in the world we live in today where we have access to everything in real time.

But that doesn’t change how the universe works.

Summer will end when it is supposed to.

Autumn will begin with all of its freshness, with a wash of vibrant colors brushed upon withering blossoms.

Let it be.

truth for today.

truth for today.

“God has not been trying an experiment on my faith or love in order to find out their quality. He knew it already. It was I who didn’t. In this trial He makes us occupy the dock, the witness box, and the bench all at once. He always knew that my temple was a house of cards. His only way of making me realize the fact was to knock it down.”

Sometimes it feels like God is playing some kind of sick game with us.

Or we think he is testing us.

Or punishing us.

All of the above are normal feelings.

But the Bible says God’s ways are not like ours; his thoughts are not like ours.

In other words, God does not think the way we do but He has given us the capacity to trust Him.

God teaches us about ourselves and how much we need Him, but it’s more than that. He wants us to be comforted and that can only happen when we trust him.

Even in death, which seems like the absolute end, He is there.

Go ahead. Ask God if He is real.

He will show you.
